“ because of something my father said. “When I die, follow the illegal coils,” that’s what he told me. He told me that if I saw a pillar of light, I would know he was no longer in this world. So I can’t bring him back, but I can follow father’s final instructions. If you give me the chance, please I have to know what it was what he wanted me to find.”
- Mira Yurizaki, Dimension W (Ep. 02) The Toonami Trending Rundown for March 5-6, 2016. A good night for Toonami’s social media buzz as every show had trended in the US during their respective East Coast airings in addition to #DBZKai during it’s encore presentation. We also got some character trends with Goku as during his battle with Android 19, he begins to succumb to the heart virus that Trunks had forewarned him about (and apparently forgetting to take the medicine Trunks gave him), as well as Mira (the first of such for Dimension W) as she partners up with Kyouma and the collectors to begin to fulfill Shido’s last wish and encountering the famed “Loser” in their first mission together. Tune in next week as One Piece begins the Thriller Bark arc, among other great moments. Until next week, stay gold. Legend: The shows listed are ordered based on their appearance on the schedule. Show trends are listed in bold. The number next to the listed trend represents the highest it trended on the list (not counting the promoted trend), judging only by the images placed in the rundown. “This is it. This is the beginning. I’m leaving the rest to you, Mira.”
- Shido Yurizaki, Dimension W (Ep. 01) The Toonami Trending Rundown for February 27-28, 2016. We welcome Dimension W in to the better cartoon show, as every show had successfully trended during their respective East Coast airings, in addition to #DBZKai during its encore presentation as well as #DimensionW and #Parasyte during their respective West Coast airings and even throughout the duration of the night. No character or in-show content trends to report, however. Ever since Space Dandy’s successful run on Toonami, there has been an increase in shows that have had their dubs made and released immediately or shortly after their respective broadcasts in Japan (such notable examples include Attack on Titan: Junior High and Durararax2. For those wanting more info on the Broadcast Dub, my colleague Chris Maffris goes into more detail regarding this.). However Toonami hasn’t been able to get in on the broadcast dub fun, until now. Dimension W looks to be a show with a lot of potential, and it’s presence is just one example that shows that it’s a good time to be a fan of Toonami and anime as a whole and we look forward to see what the future brings. Tune in next week as One Piece showcases the finale of the Lovely Land arc, among other great moments. Until next week, enjoy the Oscars and we’d like to wish a Happy 30th anniversary to the Dragon Ball anime series as well as a Happy 20th Anniversary to the Pokemon Franchise. Thanks for the memories and many more to come. Legend: The shows listed are ordered based on their appearance on the schedule. Show trends are listed in bold. The number next to the listed trend represents the highest it trended on the list (not counting the promoted trend), judging only by the images placed in the rundown. “Somehow i made it through to the end, and gathered the weight of more souls to carry for the rest of my life. Killing is all i know, but i believe…i believe i can find my way to a new future. I’m certain of it. So no matter where that future leads, I will follow this path to my destiny.”
- Akame, Akame ga Kill! (Ep. 24) The Toonami Trending Rundown for February 20-21, 2016. We bid farewell to Akame ga Kill’s run and celebrate Naruto Shippuden’s 100th Episode as every show had successfully trended in the US during their respective East Coast airings. In addition, #DimensionW also trended in the US as the promo was showcased during DBZ Kai, while the #SentaiHour would also trend for the final time (for now at least) during Parasyte, and both Akame and Kill la Kill would each bring us some character trends. Akame ga Kill! brought us Akame as she successfully defeats Esdeath and helps dethrone the empire, while Kill la Kill brought us Ryuko and Satsuki as to Ryuko’s surprise, Satsuki and Honnouji Academy decide to wage war against Ragyo. Akame ga Kill! trending retrospective Ever since Toonami’s revival in 2012, there was a question amongst the community on whether Sentai Filmworks would ever partner up with Toonami to showcase their acquisitions on the better cartoon show. Sentai’s predecessor, ADV Films never really had much of a Toonami presence back in the day, with only the short lived Giant Robot Week, Evangelion, and Super Milk Chan being its only notable entries for Toonami and Adult Swim, so skepticism on whether either side wanted to partner up wasn’t uncommon at the time. But good things come to those who wait, and eventually during Momocon 2015, Sentai would finally announce it’s Toonami debut with the dub premiere of Akame ga Kill! starting on August 8th and would also follow that up with announcing the dub premiere of Parasyte at Anime Expo which started on October 3rd. Fast forward to today, and with both shows doing very well in terms of both ratings and social media buzz, it’s pretty safe to say that Sentai’s Toonami debut has been a success, and we do hope that this partnership will bring more great things for the block and anime as a whole for years to come. As for the show itself, 24 weeks of Night Raid’s quest to dethrone the empire and Akame ga Kill’s run is now in the books. In terms of social media buzz, the hashtag #AkameGaKill managed to trend in the US every week it has aired including during its Halloween marathon, as well as Worldwide in 4 different occasions. In addition, Akame’s run also brought 7 different character and in-show content trends, Akame, Chelsea, Esdeath, Kurome, Lubbock, Mine in 3 different occasions, and Tatsumi. And as a bonus, the #SentaiHour, the hashtag used to commemorate the 12:30-1 am hour as both Akame and Parasyte both come from Sentai, also managed to trend in 5 separate occasions. Of course, as I previously mentioned, after Episode 18 the anime began to diverge from the manga’s storyline and the producers opted for a “ Gecko Ending”, a la Soul Eater and the original Fullmetal Alchemist. The manga continues on to this very day, with 67 chapters and counting (and Tatsumi as well as several other killed off characters still alive, I might add) as well as the “Akame ga Kill Zero” prequels, so for those wanting more, feel free to check those out. Regardless, thanks for the memories and we look forward to what future endeavors this great series will bring. And finally… Tune in next week as Toonami premieres the broadcast dub of Dimension W, among other great moments. Until next week, stay gold, and for those that successfully got a Comic-Con pass, congratulations, and I hope to see you in San Diego in July. Legend: The shows listed are ordered based on their appearance on the schedule. Show trends are listed in bold. The number next to the listed trend represents the highest it trended on the list (not counting the promoted trend), judging only by the images placed in the rundown. “I’m sorry [Akame]. I guess i broke my promise [to make it back alive].”
- Tatsumi, Akame ga Kill! (Ep. 23) The Toonami Trending Rundown for February 13-14, 2016. A good night for social media buzz for the night as Toonami and every show had trended in the US during their respective East Coast airings in addition to #DBZKai during it’s encore presentation as well as the #SentaiHour during Akame and Parasyte. Good news, everyone. As announced on this week’s Toonami Pre-Flight, we now know what the replacement of Akame will be: the broadcast dub premiere of Dimension W. And of course in regards to trending, #DimensionW managed to trend in the US when the promo was shown during Shippuden and Kill la Kill. “He’s absolutely right. I’m not normal anymore. The things i can sense, the things i can do…”
- Shinichi Izumi, Parasyte (Ep. 15)
The Toonami Trending Rundown for February 6-7, 2016. Bit of a tough night for trending with all the pre-Super Bowl festivities going on, but fortunately every show had managed to trend in the US during their respective East Coast airings. On the other hand, the DBZ Kai encore did not trend and we have no character or in-show content trends to report this week. Little note regarding Naruto Shippuden, in that with the broadcast of this week’s episode (98), Toonami has officially surpassed the episode count Disney XD had when they originally aired Shippuden. Of course, with 448 episodes of Shippuden and counting, we still have a lot of Naruto left to go, but we look forward to what this great franchise has for Toonami next. Tune in next week as Akame ga Kill! showcases it’s penultimate episode, among other great moments. Until next week, have a Happy Year of the Monkey, congratulations to the Denver Broncos for winning Super Bowl 50, and stay gold. Frieza: “Alright, you have our attention. What brings you here?”
Trunks: “To kill you two. What else?”
- Dragon Ball Z Kai (Ep. 55) The Toonami Trending Rundown for January 30-31, 2016. We kick off DBZ Kai’s Cell Arc on a good note as Toonami and every show had successfully trended in the US, in addition to the #SentaiHour for the third week in a row during Parasyte. Both DBZ Kai and Akame ga Kill would also produce some character trends. DBZ brought us Frieza, as his remnants are found by King Cold, gets cyberized, and heads to Earth to get revenge on Goku, as well as Trunks as he gets in Frieza’s way from doing so. Akame meanwhile gave us Mine, as she successfully defeats Budo, but would eventually succumb to her wounds during the battle, as well as Tatsumi as the Night Raid successfully retrieve him from the grasps of Esdeath and the empire and he gives Mine a farewell kiss. We’re coming down the stretch with Akame with the final three episodes on the horizon, and with the way things are going, you don’t want to miss how this ends up. Until next week, stay gold as always. Legend: The shows listed are ordered based on their appearance on the schedule. Show trends are listed in bold.
