Hey guys Inu here once again to talk about Long runners. Everybody seems to have a different definition of what a long runner is for example something that is 50 episodes long could be consider a long runner for me however a long runner is something 100 episodes or longer. What I am talking about you might ask simple I am speaking of long running shows because they get requested a whole lot. To be specific Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Fairy Tail and Hunter X Hunter 2011 have all at some point been highly requested shows that the fans want on toonami but is it a good idea? I have nothing against long runners in fact the 3 mentioned I happen to enjoy a lot (also gintama is awesome go watch it) but they have some issues mainly episode count. As of now we already have 3 long runners currently airing on the block DBZ Kai, Shippuden and onepiece two of which are very long and very likely will never air all of its episodes on toonami. Toonami is a short block even shorter after we lost 11:30 and the backend hours so every slot is important and should be used to its fullest. 3 am from what's been going on lately seems likely a slot for just reruns but the rest of the block is for new shows and new episodes of shows. Fans love there shows but would you rather have a 24-26 episode show or something like Jojo that is still on going? Sure Jojo is a great show full of manliness but a show that long will take up a year plus (part 4 anime has been confirmed so adding part 1,2,3 it will be over 100 episodes) do we really want that over something that's 24 episodes or even 12 episodes that would last only 6 to five months?
One episode of a show a week is tough because when you love a show you want more and 1 episode a week of long running shows like onepiece or naruto is rough because they have long arcs lots of characters and Imo these shows are best to watch on your own in marathons or daily opposed to 1 episode a week on a really late timeslot. These shows do have dedicated audiences a good amount do watch naruto and onepiece and dbz kai ratings wise is killing it but not everyone wants to commit watching a show that will never end some people will only watch 3 episodes of an anime and then decide to drop it or keep going. Having shows that end 4 to 6 months or sooner is good because they can rotate the lineup get a different show you might like and change things but with something like onepiece or naruto like it or not your stuck with that for life. At the end of the day if toonami plays a show you don't like or in some cases hate you can just turn the channel no one is forcing you to watch michiko or klk or w.e. If we get 11:30 back one day then yes lets pursue another long runner like jojo or hunter x hunter or just wait until kai ends otherwise I think from a business point of view it makes more sense to not pick up anything longer than 50 episodes lets keep thing short and sweet.
The future is not set in stone as Jason and the crew have proven us anything can and will happen. Who thought they be able to play klk or hellsing ultimate with its hour long episodes and gory bloodfest. Michiko is ending soon and while I don't think something like Jojo will replace it nothing is for sure we will find out its replacement soon until then Banzai!
